Dear DumBell Fitness: Why do you take a week off?

We get this question all the time, and it's always followed by "But how will I progress if we just start all over again?"

Author's note: for those of you totally new to the DumBell Fitness program, we work out on a 4-week schedule, and we take one week off between each session. During the first week, we do reps of 10. The second week is 12 reps, the third week is 14 reps, and the final week is 16 reps.

We take a week off because our bodies need time to heal after week four. During the last week of training we always focus more on muscle strength and muscle endurance than any other element of fitness. In the process of breaking down muscle fibers, our bodies may become overused, or slightly injured if we do not take a break. Basically, we need the week off to heal. All training cycles have peaks and valleys, and we want our recruits to learn to take advantage of all seasons.

However, our definition of a week off may be slightly different than yours. We believe the week should be filled with cardio. Do something different! Get out and run, swim, bike, Zumba, for the entire week. Let your muscles heal while your heart stays in condition with cardiovascular work.

When we come back to our Week 1 training cycle, our bodies are healed and ready to go. We are stronger than the previous month, so we use extra weight to get progressive results. While I’m teaching the beginners proper form, the experienced participants are preparing themselves to use more weight than before. Some of our experienced participants use two bands for every strength exercise during the first two weeks, while the counts are still low (10 count and 12 count).  Others bring their own set of 10-12 pound dumbbells. While beginners are learning proper technique, our experienced Boot Campers are pushing their muscles to the limit with extra weight.

At DumBell Fitness we always want to institute a well-balanced program with the four pillars of fitness: muscle endurance, muscle strength, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility.  There is a place for all levels of fitness in our 4-week course. Beginners walk while conditioned participants sprint during the agility course. Beginners use light weights, while veteran participants use heavy resistance. And beginners catch the fitness bug while long-time participants encourage their fellow recruits to be better than before.

This work out format works. You can see the proof when you read our Success Stories and our Wednesday Winner profiles. There is NO easy week at DumBell Fitness! If you're not already a part of the DumBell Fitness family, consider joining us for a month. We promise to change your life and your body!

Wednesday's Winners: Amanda Kalski

Please join us in congratulating Ford Island Boot Camper Amanda Kalski, this week's Wednesday's Winner!

Amanda has been in class for only one session and has already claimed the Biggest Loser title! In her first month, she lost 4.8 pounds, 4 inches, and 2.9% body fat.

"My routine is Boot Camp on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and I go to the gym on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday," says Amanda. "At the gym I typically just do cardio because I am not very knowledgeable at using the machines. I burn a minimum of 500 calories, and I split my time between the elliptical and either the treadmill or bike. At night my husband and I go on a .75 mile run. I take Saturdays off. During my week off, I went to a Core and Conditioning Class at Hickam fitness center on MWF."

Amanda tries to eat 3 square meals and 2 snacks per day. "I always eat Oatmeal Squares with skim milk for breakfast, and my morning snack is usually a Fiber One bar. Lunch is usually a turkey sandwich with fruit and chips (but only the serving size!). For dinner we try to eat something with ground turkey or chicken. If I need dessert, I split a Skinny Cow Ice Cream with my husband. Both my birthday and anniversary fell in July, and though I did 'cheat' on those two days, I still made sure to work out on both of those days."

"I love that Boot Camp pushes me to my limits," says Amanda. "It is definitely a better, harder workout than I would do on my own. Christina is motivating and pushes me to work my hardest during that one hour of Boot Camp!"

Christina was very proud of Amanda for winning the Biggest Loser title during her first session. "She had a rough first month but I could tell that she was determined to make a change in her life. She literally pushed herself everyday to complete muscle failure. I would see her take an occasional break, then get right back in line with the workout. Amanda's success proves that this program is designed for all levels of fitness. She never completely quit; she always pushed through to a new level of fitness for herself and I admire that so much! I look forward to seeing her continued success at our Ford Island Boot Camp location."

Keep up the hard work, Amanda! Congratulations from everyone at DumBell Fitness!

DumBell Gives Back: CPO Selectee Boot Camp!

I love this time of year on the Navy calendar when the Chief's Mess pulls together to initiate their new members. When I was a young sailor on board the USS Grasp I looked up to the Chief's Mess and now as a spouse, I love the idea of giving back to that very same community. This season, during Chief's initiation I've been working out with some of the new selectees every Tuesday morning. Waking up at 0500 isn't my favorite thing to do, but the enthusiasm from the selectees once I get out there is contagious and it's an AWESOME way to start my day. Hoo-yah Chief Selectees and congratulations from all of us at DumBell Fitness!

Starting off a very early morning with some up and overs!

Mountain climbers!

All smiles, even at 0500!

Parachuters!

Leg day means lots of lunges!

Wednesday's Winners: Vicki Tennimon

Congratulations to today's Wednesday's Winner, Vicki Tennimon!

"I won Biggest Loser after my second month at the McGrew Boot Camp. I lost 6 pounds!" says Vicki. "I actually gained a pound my first month, although I could see changes in my body and could definitely
tell a difference in how I felt and my in overall fitness. So I stuck with it and started seeing the results on the scale in the second month!"

In addition to Boot Camp, Vicki runs about three miles around her hilly neighborhood, and also uses workout videos now and then. On the weekends, she also likes to run 5Ks with her husband. "As far as diet, I don't do anything super special with my diet besides watching my calorie intake and trying to eat a well-balanced diet. I try to focus on meals that incorporate as many healthfully prepared whole foods as possible. To help me watch my calorie intake and track the calories I burn, I love the iPhone app from www.sparkpeople.com; both the app and the site are free!"

I love the entire McGrew group!" enthuses Vicki. "It's a very supportive, friendly group of people with just enough competition to keep you on your toes! Cheri is an awesome coach! She knows how to motivate you when you're losing steam and is always there when you need some help or advice offline. She's very knowledgable about health and fitness and I think her personality is a great fit for bootcamp!"

Trainer Cheri Kendall returns the compliment! "I love having Vicki in class! She has a great 'can do' attitude and a rockin' sense of humor. She's laughing even when struggling through a challenging exercise. I really appreciate that she always gives 100% and I can't wait to watch her continuing transformation in the months to come!"

"I have about 35 more pounds I'd like to lose," says Vicki, "and I look forward to seeing what Boot Camp can help me accomplish in the months to come!

Healthy Habits: Spaghetti Squash with Black Beans!

Everyone here at DumBell Fitness is a HUGE fan of spaghetti squash. It's such a wonderful and delicious alternative to pasta! We were thrilled when trainer Alicia Palmer shared this recipe with us--it's a nice alternative to serving it with a marinara sauce. The best part is that this is made with ingredients most of us have in our house all the time. We hope you'll try it and love it, too!

Spaghetti Squash with Black Beans
Half an onion, chopped
Half a jalapeno, finely chopped
One red pepper, chopped
1/2 spaghetti squash, shredded
One cup or so of black beans, drained
Half a large tomato, chopped
Handful of cilantro, chopped
Cheese, to taste
Dash of salt

Sauté onion, jalapeno and red pepper until soft, add black beans and squash (shredded so it looks like spaghetti), and sauté until hot. Add salt (I added salt because I used homemade black beans that didn't have much in them already, may not have if they were canned). Take off heat, then add in chopped cilantro and tomato. Add cheese to the top!

Thanks Alicia for a tasty new spin on spaghetti squash!

DumBell Success Stories: Stephanie Sherard

Congratulations to today's DumBell Success Story, Stephanie Sherard!

Stephanie Sherard, also known as "Preacher's Wife," has been in the Ford Island MWF 0830 course for two and a half years. She first joined upon the recommendation of a friend. "I am so thankful I ran into my old pal and that she told me about her experience with DumBell Fitness. She had two kids, but looked toned and she had lost weight! I had to know what she was doing!"

"I started taking Boot Camp because I was sick of feeling fat and tired. And, I was thrilled that there was someone on site to watch my baby," says Stephanie. "I think the biggest obstacle for me was not having the option of childcare while working out. It was an excuse I would use a lot!"

Outside of Boot Camp, Stephanie runs with her kids and husband on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings. She also takes Yoga on Tuesday mornings. Stephanie also tries to eat a clean diet. "I try to eat my wholegrain carbohydrates in the morning and then taper off as the day goes by. When dinner comes around, I eat lean proteins and vegetables. Our family also has one cheat day per week. It was hard in the beginning, but now it is a routine that we all look forward to."

Stephanie also took DumBell CORP to tweak her diet. "I wanted to refresh what I already knew and to learn more--I did not go to lose weight. I learned a lot of good things from the class! I recommend taking it along with Boot Camp so that you get a good amount of knowledge to start the road to a better and healthier you."

"My favorite part of Boot Camp is getting to work out outside in sunny Hawaii," says Stephanie. "I never know what fun exercise I'm going to do that day. My favorite part about Christina is that she is very motivating and I like the sense of humor she brings to the class. She has a way of making you laugh even when you don't want to!"

"I love seeing Stephanie at Boot Camp," says Ford Island trainer Christina Landry. "I could tell she wanted the change when she started over two years ago. She lost fat and gained muscle within her first two months and it showed! She visibly looked healthier, leaner, and more energetic. Stephanie always has the best attitude at Boot Camp. She smiles at my jokes (which I love) even though she already heard them a hundred times. I love her enthusiasm and it is contagious. In fact, she even had her husband, Shawn, join the Boot Camp for a couple of months. I also love seeing Stephanie out in town. She is always dressed to the nines and showing off her amazingly fit body! She's a true testament that a military wife can be a good wife, a good mother, and be good to herself all at the same time."

Stephanie and her husband Shawn, who also occasionally takes Boot Camp!

Thanks for sharing your story with us, Stephanie!

Quick Tips: Stretching

If you've attended one of our Boot Camp classes before, then without a doubt you've heard your trainer scream, "If you can't touch your toes, you need yoga in your life!" Stretching is such an important part of staying healthy. It can help increase your athletic performance and decrease your risk of injury. DumBell Fitness is so dedicated to stretching that we're planning to debut a Yoga class in September!

Stretching basics:
  1. Aim for a total of 10 minutes of stretching a day. Stretch both the front and back of each muscle. Make sure to hold each stretch for 10-30 seconds.

  2. The best time to stretch is when your muscles are already warm. Stretching right after a work out or right after getting out of a warm bath or shower is ideal.

  3. Don't bounce while stretching. Hold the pose steady. You want to feel the tension of the stretch, but you don't want to push yourself to the point of pain. You might injure yourself further.

  4. Yoga is a great way to get a deep stretch, and is a great way to relieve tightness from running or to help with injuries. Take a class, or even use a DVD until you learn the poses.

  5. Be consistent! Just like exercise, you'll see the most benefits from stretching if you do it regularly!

Quick Tips: Working Out While Traveling!

Today's post is the brainchild of Hickam Trainer Alicia Palmer! While traveling this summer, she put together this intense workout in her hotel room--NO equipment needed! "I was traveling in Vegas with my two young boys. It was way too hot outside to run, and I forgot my exercise band (oops!). This workout had me shaking so bad I could barely type afterwards!"

Here's Alicia's travel workout:

Do each exercise for one minute. Break for ten seconds in-between each exercise, and do the entire circuit twice.

  • Push-ups
  • Crunches
  • High knees
  • Tricep dips
  • Plank
  • Kick butts
  • More push-ups!
  • Bicycles
  • Burpees
  • Squats
  • Still more push-ups!
  • Jumping jacks
  • Stationary lunges left
  • Stationary lunges right
  • Plank
  • Power jacks
  • Sumo squats
  • Sumo abs
  • Happy feet

There are officially NO excuses for not working out on vacation, or if you have to miss a day of class! Thanks for sharing this with us, Alicia!

Past Wednesday's Winners: Check 'Em Out!

One of our favorite regular blog offerings is our Wednesday's Winners! Each month, one recruit from each of our classes is awarded the Biggest Loser title. They have to lose at least 4 pounds, and then lose more weight and inches than anyone else in their class. Their success is such an inspiration to us and to their fellow classmates! With that said, today we'd like to highlight our past winners, and tell them thank you once more for sharing their stories with us!

DumBell Gives Back: Honolulu Zoo Charity Boot Camp!

On Saturday, August 4th, over 40 families came out to support the Honolulu Zoo at the 2nd DumBell Fitness Boot Camp for Charity! Our goal was to raise $1,000 for the Zoo's Education Department, but true to form, our recruits were more generous than we could have imagined! The final total raised for the Zoo was $2038! We are overwhelmed by your generosity, and are so proud to have you all as part of the DumBell Fitness family! We can't thank you enough for such a fabulous morning. Plans are already in the works to make this an annual event! We hope you enjoy these photos from the day!
